I had a cast put on after surgery on November 21st. I was washing dishes from a wheelchair when I spilled a huge bowl of water on my lap and then into my cast. Went to ER and they installed a new cast. At 4:oo am this morning I woke and decided to get a shower. I put on my dry cast over my regular cast, got in the shower and everything was great. As I was drying off I noticed the bottom of the cast was completely soaked through, the dry cast used for showering was defective and leaked.
My wife is upset that this is the third cast that came off of my foot in eight days. I never touched the staples because of bacteria on my hands, I put on a clean dry sock and installed an orthopedic boot.
I am waiting to hear from the surgeon on call for proper medical advice. The only differences I can see in a cast and a boot is that cast material is sterile and the boot is not. A cast probably is cheaper to insurance than a boot, but I’m not a doctor.
I feel I’ll probably get a text book response of go get another cast but using the boot it’s the best I could do for now. Life goes on and the sun will probably come up tomorrow, if it doesn’t this won’t matter. Any thoughts on this? Does anyone else have any similar stories? The surgeon on call is the same one who sent me to the er the last time to have the first cast replaced, how embarrassing. I don’t think his advice will change.
